Australia’s level of competition watchdog on Monday accused Google of sharing “misinformation” about a proposed law that would call for the search giant to pay back media firms for information articles. The reaction arrives immediately after Google printed an open up letter expressing new regulation will “hurt how Australians use Google Research and YouTube.”

“A proposed law, the News Media Bargaining Code, would pressure us to provide you with a dramatically worse Google Research and YouTube, could direct to your knowledge being handed over to massive news businesses, and would set the totally free products and services you use at danger in Australia,” wrote Google Taking care of Director Mel Silva in the open up letter on Monday. Australia released a draft of the News Media Bargaining Code last thirty day period. The regulation would have to have electronic platforms, initially Google and Facebook, to negotiate with media retailers and spend for news content material that seems on their providers. The draft law also states Google would have to have to give media shops observe of improvements to its algorithms that could influence issues like referral website traffic or research ranking.

The ACCC said session on the draft legislation will get position until finally Aug. 28, with a the code being finalized “shortly soon after.”

Google did not immediately react to a request for more comment.
